When in doubt find someone experienced to help with technical problems. MAME and coin-op alike are welcome here! You can get it to work but it won't be as accurate or dependable as a CRT. In fact, it's not worth doing IMO, but I'll describe it for you.Light Gun games work by reflecting light back to the sensor (photo-diode) of the gun, in combination with the fact that CRTs don't really have a refresh rate in the same way an LCD/LED/PLASMA display does.In terms of refresh a modern flat screen is technically 'lower' than a CRT in the fact that it has a refresh rate in the first place and isn't simply 'always on' for a lack of better terminology. The very fact that there is a refresh rate will cause many shots to be missed because the sensor event (usually a white block displayed for 1 frame) will occur between frames, making it so the gun has nothing to detect. On the topic of reflectivity, most flat screens or modern HDTV screens are either anti reflective or have a matte screen.
I think you need to wait a bit longer. Some issues like this dont get fixed for years as we are lacking devs. Fortunately there was a lot of fighting with aspect ratios and resolutions recently and possibly there is currently some knowledge present in some heads - even if i think your proposed hack is pointing somewhere else. Additionally the devs are currently preparing a release and have a lot of work.Bumping issues is often not needed and doesnt accelerate improvements. Especially not on a weekly base. Providing additional information is nice though.
